Burl growths can be harvested without cutting down the tree, which is why you normally see Australian burls in cap form. Burl turning blanks are burl caps cut into a manageable shape for turning projects such as a square or a rectangle, leaving one side flat and the outer side bumpy or jagged with the bark edge.
